Dominatrics comes from the term “domme” a wordplay of the pseudo-French female variation of the slang dom (for dominant).  It is close to the Latin words “dominus” meaning master, “domina” referring to a mistress.

As Western media increasingly delves on fetish culture, depictions of dominatrices in film and television are also becoming more and more common.

Similar to most sex industry image, the stereotypical sex industry portrayal of pro dommes is true to only a limited section of the entire population.  It is unrepresentative of socially dominant women in general.  Women who only express dominance socially in their personal relationships wear a variety of clothing as diverse as within any group of people.  In the clothes of their own choosing, most socially dominant women are unrecognizable as dominant women to those who are accustomed to the dominatrics stereotype.
